Hikigaya Hachiman belongs to those categories of anime characters who are very good at dealing with most of their daily life situations without any assistance from others.
He’s the main protagonist of “My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU,” also known as the “OreGairu” anime series.
Although this anime is not among the top hitters and remains in the shadows of other popular shows of the same genre, the people who follow the story are loyal to it, thanks to the unique personality of Hikigaya and his ideologies regarding various daily life activities and life in particular.
Hikigaya Hachiman is a high schooler who doesn’t have any friends, he doesn’t like grouping and has no interest in a romantic relationship with a girl.
However, the main point that stands out the most is that Hikigaya is proud to possess all these qualities instead of looking down upon himself.
Hikigaya Hachiman’s quotes that appeal the most:
About Youth and Lies:
Youth is a lie. It is nothing but evil. Those who rejoice in youth deceive themselves and those around them, accepting in full the circumstances that devour them.
These lines were the very first start of the anime when Hikigaya Hachiman was seen standing all alone while imagining the environment around him, which was filled with students engaging in groups and chattering.
In the face of the word “youth,” they will twist any common interpretation or accepted notion out of recognition. In their minds, lies, secrets, sins, and failure are nothing more than the spice of youth.
In this context, young people are more hostile towards the decision between right and wrong. To them, things like lies, secrets, mistakes, and failures are just part of what makes being young exciting and interesting. They don’t see these things as bad; instead, they think they add flavor to their experiences.
Hachiman describes the recklessness and laziness that young people tend to develop over time, assuming them to be a part of the life that makes their youth more juicy and fun.
If failure is truly the proof of one’s youth. Then is there not something abnormal about one who fails at making friends, if he is not still in the midst of his youth?
Why he dislikes nice girls:
Girls only take interest in attractive guys and indulge in impure relationships. In other words, they’re my enemies.
He has never been the type to associate with girls in general. Hachiman explained that he once proposed to a girl and got rejected. And from that day forward he insisted on never thinking about a romantic relationship with girls.
I hate nice girls. If they so much as say hello, it stays on my mind. If they return texts, my heart races. The day one calls me, I know I’ll look at my call history and grin. But that’s just them being nice. People who are nice to me are also nice to everyone else. I almost end up forgetting that.
Hikigaya formed a habit of not engaging in cool conversation with anyone whether it was a girl or boy. As he explained in this quote, if he gets closer to a girl and gets a text message or call from them, then it becomes a total distraction that doesn’t let him rest at ease.
Therefore, it was the best decision on his part to ignore such relationships and never be bothered by any of their perks, even though everyone else around him was starving for that kind of relationship.
When he justified his ability to stay alone:
Just so you know, it’s not like I can’t talk to people. I just don’t do pointless chats. I don’t need any rectifying.
Unlike many other anime lonely anime characters, Hikigaya Hachiman isn’t fully an introvert, as he is never seen confused or overwhelmed while trying to talk to someone or make appearances in front of many others.
What the hell is with everyone telling me to change? I don’t want other people telling me who I am.
He knows very well about the path he has chosen and holds pride in forming a way of living that’s entirely different from what the masses do.
About change and dreams:
Changing is a way of running from the situation, too, isn’t it?
From his perspective, change wasn’t something that would correct the current circumstances that one has been going through. It was just a means to escape and ignore the problems.
Why can’t you just accept someone for who they are and what’s in their past?
It was best to let people have their concepts regarding their appearance in an environment instead of pointing out the difference between them and the other while suggesting certain methods to adapt to the environment.
It’s said that if you change, the world changes with you, but that’s not true. When people evaluate others, it’s through prejudice and existing impressions.
The opinion of others isn’t something that can be comprehended and fixed. Most of the time it’s best to ignore them and continue moving. However, it might be difficult for most people to just ignore those words as if they never happened.
The question: “The world does not change. One can change oneself. How, then, does one change?
The answer: Become the god of a new world.
Hachiman is known to have several different opinions on the daily life activities revolving around a student’s life.
However, this quote has a lot more going on than just someone’s ordinary school life. It implies to almost everyone that learning the new implementations and mastering the recent developments is one way to keep up with the change.
Saying ‘I can change myself” is just admitting defeat in order to adapt to this cold, cruel world, so that you can be its slave. It’s no more than a basis for deceiving yourself and decorating it with pretty words.
It depends upon the context in which this quote was used. However, Hikigaya tries to imply that people tend to give up and admit defeat by trying to relate the situation with something that could become capable of in the future but not now.
About the ability to live alone:
Don’t underestimate me. I have the extraordinary
ability to be alone even in crowds of “most people.”
Living alone was never a disadvantage to Hikigaya Hachiman. He developed a sense of pride that justified his lonely stature.
That’s right. I’ve gotten through everything alone. While all of you were arguing and consoling each other, I was taking on everything headon alone.
One of my favorite quotes from the entire anime is about being able to grow up alone and facing most of the difficult situations alone while others were seeking support from their fellow friends. In case of Hikigaya, his actions deserves praise become not everyone is capable of doing what he’s a pro at.
It is in the nature of animals to live in groups. Carnivores maintain a hierarchy. Those who don’t become the boss must carry stress all their lives. And herbivores surely feel the dilemma of sacrificing their peers in order to survive attacks from their natural enemies. This is why living in groups is of no benefit to the individual. That being the case, I choose the path of the bear which never forms groups. Bears are solitary creatures that feel no insecurity with living alone.
Even though he changes as time passes and accepts the fact that he dislikes relationships and groups, there remains his past when he stood alone, facing everything all by himself. It’s quite admirable.
Hikigaya decides the term “everyone”
Whos “everyone”? The same “everyone” you use to beg your mom for something by saying “Everyone else has one”? Who’s that supposed to be? I dont have friends, so I never got to use that excuse.
It was a mistake to choose these words in front of someone very good at defining the fake satisfactory provocations used to impress others.
About Kindness and lies:
If the truth is cruel, then lies must be kind. That’s why kindness is a lie.
It was when he was explaining his connections with girls that came to know about his past when he was rejected and that even a single text message from a girl is enough to break his daily life principles.
Someone who’s worked hard at being alone doesn’t fall for the same trick twice. I’m a veteran at this. I’m the best there is when it comes to losing.
It was the moment we felt sad for Hikigaya, given the fact that it doesn’t bother him any longer if he is about to lose.
About Relationships :
You cant reset life, but you can reset human relationships.
He tried to make a point that relationships are painful only as long as they exist. And that it’s possible to end a relationship and become strangers with someone who was a part of our lives.
If you’ve got problems with human relationships, just destroy the relationships themselves and the problem is gone. If everyone is alone, there won’t be any fights or arguments.
Vague solutions to end relationships, yet an effective method. It was when they were figuring out a way to get Tsurimi Rumi (a sixth grader) back into her group after she was deliberately left out while she chose to stay in the circumstances without making any efforts to associate back in her group.
About Lonely people:
Just like Stand users are drawn to one another, lonely people have a knack for finding other lonely people.
It was when Hikigaya was able to figure out the situation that Tsurimi was going through. As someone who has faced similar circumstances, he grasped the entire scene with ease.
When you speak to a lonely person, keep it quiet and confidential. You have to use the utmost consideration to avoid making them feel exposed.
That seems to be the way when approaching a lonely person in hopes of bringing a change in their life and letting them feel that they aren’t alone.
Tsurimi Rumi – They’re all idiots.
He – That’s how most people in the world are. Good for you for realizing it early in life.
Hikigaya was the only person who Rumi understood well enough to share her situation with.
People who are alone are pressured to stay alone. If they work hard to stand out in something, it only becomes ammo to use against them. That’s the lousy rule of the world of kids.
Become someone else will use their situation to their advantage and try to act cool by pointing out even the slightest of their mistakes.
When he explained the true nature of human beings:
People who are nice to me are also nice to ever one else. I almost end up forgetting that.
A sad realisation that we are not special if someone is being nice. It might be in their nature to act in that matter and be nice even to the worst possible person.
When humans feel truly scared, they can’t think about anyone else. They try to save themselves, even if it means sacrificing someone else. Once they expose that ugly tendency, they can’t be friends again.
It was when they were planning to destroy the group of girls who isolated Tsurimi Rumi.
If you can’t get along without putting someone else down, it can’t be real friendship.
About trying your best:
Your efforts will never betray you. They’Il betray your dreams, though. Not all dreams will come true through effort. Actually, most of them won’t come true. But if you tried your best, you can take solace in that.
Most of our dreams never end up becoming a reality. However, working hard has its own advantage. It provides a feeling of being a responsible person. And eventually, something is gained from all the grind.
