One of the most interesting parts of the entire Solo Leveling Manhwa was the clash between Hwang Dong Su vs. Sung Jin Woo. A battle that led Thomas Andre to be defeated for the first time.
Hwang Dong Su was simply spitting in fire even after he was aware of the consequences if he collided with Sung Jin Woo.
Thomas Andre warned Hwang to not engage in battle with Sung. But, by that time he was driven by revenge and wanted to avenge his brother at all costs.
He already had made up his mind to not target Sung Jin Woo directly.
When Sung Jin Woo and Yoo Jin Ho toured America to attend the International Guild Conference, Hwang seized the opportunity and kidnapped Yoo Jin Ho and restrained him in an abandoned factory.
It happened because when Sung heard of ‘Kamishs’ remains, he was moved and couldn’t wait to lay his hands on them.
The next thing we encounter is Hwang Dong Su tortured Jin Hoo badly enough to drop his health below 10% as analysed by Sung’s system.
However, it was not long before Sung could discover their location and get there using ‘shadow exchange‘ teleportation.
Let’s look at how Sung Jin Woo Defeated Hwang Dong Su:
This is when Hwang Dong Su and Sung Jin Woo fought in chapter 144 & 145 of the web novel. However their fight was nothing sort of interesting, as Hwang couldn’t even get closer to landing a single blow to Sung.
Although Hwang Dong Su was an S-rank hunter, along with his boosted powers, Sung Jin Woo could finish him within a matter of seconds if not for the interruption by Thomas Andre.
Sung was enraged after seeing what they did to his friend in his absence.

Let me tell you, the first punch that Sung landed on him was enough to make Hwang bl€€d through the mouth. And a few other punches of similar intensity did the trick.

Who is Hwang Dong Su?
Hwang Dong Su was the younger brother of Hwang Dong Suu. Their names are almost similar which makes it difficult for people.
He was an exceptional s-rank hunter and was soon offered by the American Hunter’s Guild to join them in return for an increase in his power by 20% to 30% along with a huge sum of money.
He accepted the offer and left South Korea.
It was a life-changing event for him to be able to join the strongest guild in America ‘The Scavenger Guild’ under the leadership of the most powerful national-level hunter in the world named Thomas Andre.
Why Hwang Dong Su wanted to k!ll Sung Jin Woo?
It was during the ‘lizards’ arc that Sung Jin Woo killed Su’s elder brother in chapter 24 of the webtoon.
Since there were a total of eight members in Hwang Dong Suu’s party, Sung was ordered by the system to eliminate them all, and so he did!
However, when Hwang Dong Su learnt that the two outsiders (Sung Jin Woo & Too Jin Ho) who joined his late elder brother’s party for that particular raid, survived and returned safely, he couldn’t shake off the feeling of these two being the culprits who annihilated his brother’s party.
That’s when he visits his homeland ‘South Korea’ to deal with Sung Jin Woo once and for all.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t meet Sung and had to return to America without fulfilling his mission.
It’s important to note that Hwang initiated the fight regardless of the warning because he was certain that Thomas Andre would step in if his members were involved.
And this was the true purpose of Hwang Dong Su. To get Thomas to fight Sung Jin Woo and k!ll him.
What happened to Hwang Dong Su and Who is greed?
After the fight was over when Thomas Andre accepted his defeat, JinWoo left the area without any further chaos.
Before leaving, he extracted the shadow of Hwang Dong Su and gave him the name ‘greed’ because it was his greed for revenge that cost him his life.
Greed would then go on to be a faithful and loyal servant of JinWoo. He was quite powerful and would significantly help Sung in the further battles ahead.
He was also among the very few shadows who could speak.
How strong was Hwang Dong Su?
Dong Su was exceptional to begin with. He was powerful enough to be noticed by higher authorities in America.
An S-rank hunter from South Korea who made it to the ‘Scavenger guild’. He was also known as the ace of the guild.
The scavenger guild had the highest numbers of S-rank hunters and Dong Su was the most recognised and praised hunter among them all.
On top of all that, his powers were enhanced by 20% to 30% which is rare for hunters.
Throughout the series, we only get to see Hwang Dong Su fight twice.
- Hwang Dong Su vs Sung Il-Hwan.
Sung Il-Hwan was the father of Sung Jin Woo and an S-rank hunter from South Korea.
When the two collided, Hwang was badly beaten and left alive on purpose. It would be fair to say that the fight was almost one-sided.

We already know the consequences of this battle.
And there is not a single factor to determine Hwang’s strength through this battle.
Who won the fight between Sung Jin Woo and Hwang Dong Su?
JinWoo managed to defeat Hwang Dong Su effortlessly when the two faces each other at the abandoned factory where JinAh was captured as a hostage. Dong Su stood no chance as the power gap between the two characters was vast.
Why was Hwang Dong Su Popular?
He was an exception S-rank hunter from Korea and was know to be one of the most powerful among all the other top level hunters in his country. As a result, people looked up to him and almost every citizen knew of his presence. However, he later decided to work for America instead.
